First Soccer Practice

"What?? You mean I'm s'posed to listen to the coach first?" Today, at Lance's first soccer practice, when coach called everyone to gather, Lance took off running and ready to just PLAY SOCCER! He learned a few valuable things today:

1. Be coachable

2. Take Turns

3. Share - pass the ball to your teammates
4. No hands!

4. Just give it all you've got! (Towards the goal, of course)

I think the outlook is good for this little soccer dude! He's so excited that he's finally BIG and STRONG enough to play soccer like his brother! He keeps reminding me of this - oh, and he's also SO TALL, as he often points out. (To be quite honest, in a team of 3,4, and 5 year olds, Lance fits right in. He's the youngest player, but you couldn't tell that by height! He takes after his Dad.)

Fend for yourself

Look at this proud toddler. I think he had an epiphany this morning: "If you want something done, you've got to do it yourself."

The Thomas S. Monsen Train

Yesterday, at naptime, I asked Lance what book he wanted to read,

"The Thomas S. Monsen Train one." He replied.
Do you mean, "Thomas the Train Engine?"
"Ya." Well, that answers that.

Cabin Quake!!!!

Where did this week go? I can't believe it's already Monday. Let me go back 2 weekends ago.

We arrived at our cabin all covered in snow and I quickly turned on the heater and tried to keep the kids warm, Jace turned on the record player to the original Star Wars music, and Jared unloaded the van and snowblowed the walkway. The cabin slowly began to warm up.

We had just finished a relaxing dinner of French Dip sandwiches and were beginning to watch a show when all of the sudden we heard something and felt the cabin begin to shake. Louder and louder the rumbling sound roared. Jared jumped up from his chair toward the center of the cabin. I was already there shouting to Jared, "What's happening????" (This was just after we'd heard about the quake in Nevada that reached SLC) I was seriously thinking, "Earthquake!" Then Jared started laughing and went to look out the window. Sure enough, it was the snow that began to melt and slid down off the roof of the cabin creating a pile of snow as high as the roof.

The rest of our cabin enjoyment was less scary and more relaxing, as we had anticipated...

"Look mom! The snow is as tall as me!" (If he could say it, he would, I'm sure)

Do you think he likes it out here?

Happiest King of the Mountain (Lance)
Is Jace trying to touch his nose with his toe or pretend he's an avalanche?
Love through a window
Look how gorgeous it is!
Boys and Puddles
Jace and I got to visit the river. I didn't even need the key to unlock the gate. We just stepped over it. Instead of rocks in the summer, Jace threw snowballs...
Busy project in the works...
Tadah!
This was the most snow that Jared has seen at the cabin in a long time (and more than I have ever seen), and I'm glad we were able to make good use of it :) Grandma and Grampa Schauerhamer would be so happy to see that we had a fabulous time at the cabin!

What if...

If Jared and I had girls, they might look something like this:

If Kyle was about 20 years older, he might look something like this:

Aren't they cute?

Thank goodness we're just us right now. We had a great time at the ward luau tonight. We enjoyed Hawaiian Haystacks, great music that Kyle really got into, and Lance, Jace, and Mom were limbo stars.

Jace's Poem

You have to turn your volume up to hear this, but it's awesome! Last night, Jace read a poem written by himself at the annual Poetry and Prose night at his school. Way to go, Jace!

Cuckoo Bird, Cuckoo Bird

Your feathers are so soft

You tell us when it's bedtime and time to go to bed.

I like it when you say "Cuckoo", you are our Cuckoo Bird

Cuckoo Bird, Cuckoo Bird

I asked Jace what inspired this poem. He said, "It was the one that I could think of that had the right rhythm with the right words."

Two Fish, Blue Fish

Yesterday we went swimming with several other moms and kids at Fairmont Aquatic center (indoor). Lance braved the "river" where there is a current of water that carries you through a sort of canal under a bridge and then toward a whirlpool. We swirled around in there a few times, too. We had so much fun that we didn't even stop to take pictures until after we were done! Kyle didn't even complain that his upper lip started to look a little blue. Hopefully you can see by these faces who had a good time.

3,2,1...

"3...2...1...BEEP!" Kyle loves to yell something that sounds like this when he shoots a basket. It is SOOO fun to watch.

3 Busy Boys in Preschool

First, we made the cookies... and then we ate them!

(Timothy, Lance, and Andrew cutting out note-shaped cookies. They are learning about music this week at our house. Oh, and that's Kyle waving above Timothy's head)
Thanks for the note cookie cutters, Mom! (I got a lot of great stuff from my Mom, who has taught piano for longer than I can remember)

Father-Son outting

Jared and Jace return home from a father-son-and grandfather (Grampa Martin was there, just not here for the pic) outting at the 2008 Hunting Expo. I don't know, do you think Jace had a good time? (Just for the record, Jared did have a good time also, he's just being tolerant after I made him back up from coming into the house so that I could get this picture)

Crazy writing habits

Those of you that have Google reader - sorry about my blogging habits. I guess when I go back and make little edits or changes on past entries, it acts like I updated my blog and sends you to those outdated sights. I don't know what to tell you about this, just that I'm a goofy writer that thinks of little changes I want to make days or even weeks later. Sometimes its just that night when I'm in bed just after updating my blog and turning off my computer. So I can't promise that it won't happen anymore, just know that I'm kind of a silly writer, and please love me anyway, kay?

Pink guy above is from Monster's Inc, but with other stuff on him, too.

Guy on right of pink guy is from the movie, Dinosaur.

The fence around them, I just made it up.

Jace's Biscuits

Jace: I wanted to do a science experiment. And they turned out to look like bread dough. So, I decided to put them in the oven and bake them.
They had too much baking soda in them, so we took out the baking soda in the recipe.

Jace's Biscuit Recipe:

Yeast
Honey
Water
White Vinegar
More honey
Lots of flour

Put it in the oven for 7 minutes. Take it out and it’s done!

Happy Birthday, Boys!

Lance asked me to take this one today - Good idea, since I didn't realize at the time what day it is!
16 Months ago today, Kyle was born. I was telling Kyle and Lance about this today, when Lance said he wanted to have another birthday, too. I realized that Lance can share this day every month with Kyle because they were both born on the 7th. So today we celebrated Kyle's 16-month, and Lance's 40-month birthday. You cannot even tell they're both running temperatures today! Poor kids!

Too short? No problem!

Here is the solution to a too-short bed frame. Now I can fit those under-the-bed boxes in! Jared cut and glued these blocks of wood so that the wheels wouldn't roll. Hurray for extra space and a clever handyman!

Grandma's obituary

Frances Schauerhamer "Loving Mother" Frances Marie Fox Schauerhamer, age 85, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family and joined her eternal sweetheart, Walter, on January 31, 2008.She was born April 6th, 1922 in Eureka, Utah to Edward and Violet Fox, the youngest of nine children. Frances enjoyed life to the fullest, and always took the time to stop and enjoy her surroundings. She took joy in every second and in every breath. She had a curiosity of life, loved to learn, and was known as the "Energizer Bunny" because she would just keep going and going. Her biggest joy in life was to be in the company of family and friends. Frances married Walter Schauerhamer August 15th, 1942 in Reno, Nevada. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Walter died May 12, 2007. She met Walt while roller-skating one night in Eureka. From that point on, her sole career was raising her family, at which they will all attest she did a perfect job. Frances served in many callings in the church including Relief Society President, Ward Librarian, and Temple worker. Frances and Walt served as missionaries in the Liberty Stake and Welfare Bakery. Frances is survived by her six children: Lynda Leckie (Lon), Dawna Moore (Joseph), Steven (Sue), Judy Martin (Chesley), Karen Nicholson (Mike), and Michael (Penny). Walter and Frances were blessed with 22 grandchildren and 37 great-grand-children. It was rewarding for her family to care for her in the final years of her life. Funeral services will be held on Mon. February 4, 2008 at Noon at the Parley's Stake Center, 1870 E. Parley's Canyon Blvd. Friends and family may visit on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008 at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S. 6-8 p.m., and Monday at the church 10:30-11:45 a.m. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 S, Sandy. More on Grandma...

I love funerals. I get to hear the many wonderful things about a person I have known and cared about. It's even better than reading a biography. It's a humbling thought to me that the spirit of the deceased may be there, at the funeral, listening to and enjoying our memories of them.

Grandma’s funeral today was beautiful. I heard and learned even more great things about her.
Her friend of 31 years, Lucille, spoke first. She told of a time within the past year that she sent a gift to Grandma, and she misspelled her name, Frances. She spelled it, “Francis”. Grandma said something like, “you still don’t spell my name right after this many years.” And Lucille said, “Oh, it’s just habit.” Grandma said, “Oh, well if it’s habit then it’s okay.”

Lucille also shared the time that she was new to the ward, not many even knew her name, when she was told that she was to be a counselor in the R.S. as Grandma was the president. She asked Grandma how she knew her name. Grandma told her that she prayed and fasted about who would be a good counselor for her, and she remembered her name. They had met only briefly before! One of their first nights as the R.S. presidency, they went out to visit the new sisters in the ward. Grandma offered a meal to the sister at the first house. Then she offered a meal to the sister at the next house. Soon, they had several meals lined up for sisters, and Lucille was beginning to wonder who was going to do all this cooking! She was very busy the next day preparing meals, as well as the other counselor and Grandma. Another time, Grandma saw to it that a sister in need have her home cleaned. It took Lucille 2 days to do the job, but it got done. She told several more stories of Walt and Francis and the services they did for others.

Then grandchildren, Davis and Kristi, read memories written by each of the grandchildren. Mine was a shortened version of the previous blog entry. Here’s Jared’s:

It's hard to focus on one single experience that sticks out about Grandma. I spent a lot of time at her house for a few years of my childhood when my mother was sick. Grandma was always good to me. One experience that does stick out a little is a time we were all at the cabin. I wanted to go fishing in the river and I wasn't allowed to go on my own. I asked a few people to take me, but nobody wanted to go back to the river. I asked grandma and she agreed to go with me. I didn't have a pole, but I found some fishing line, a hook, and some cheese. She stood on the bank for a few minutes and I threw the hook in the water several times. She eventually said it was time to go. I asked to do just a few more casts and she agreed. I caught a fish and soon the whole family was back fishing the river. We pulled in many fish that day. I know Grandma gave of her time for me many times. I'm sure she did that for all of us. I don't think she really wanted to be standing with me on the river when she could be visiting with all the other people who were at the cabin that day. But she did it anyway. I'm thankful for all the times she cared enough about me to set aside time to help me have a good time. She was a great example to me, and I hope I have acquired some of her qualities.

Grandma’s son, Steve, always at ease with public speaking and making people laugh, shared a few fun facts. If Grandma had known that her casket would be the first one carried in the same limo. that carried Gordon B. Hinckley, she would have been sure to make it so. Grandma always enjoyed having Steve read the paper to her. She liked keeping up on current events. She was interested in politics. In fact, she has already voted. He wouldn’t say who she voted for, only that it was a wise choice. He shared his memory of when he was a wayard teenager. Grandma and Grandpa must have gone to some fireside or meeting that gave them the idea, but one day, out of the blue, Grandma and Grandpa told him that they loved him very much, and they trusted him to make good decisions. He said, “after that, what was the fun in being rebellious?” He didn’t want to hurt his mom and dad. It wasn’t because he was worried about his salvation or anything, he just didn’t want to hurt his mom and dad.

There were many other great stories told about the kind of energy Grandma had and so many things that she did, and I know I’m just not doing the funeral much justice, but I will just close by saying that I am so grateful to have had this amazing woman in my life. I will strive to live my life better because of the example I have seen from Grandma and Grandpa.

Grandma and Grampa Reunite

Christmas 2006
This is one of the last photos I have of G & G Schauerhamer. Aren't they so cute together?
Yesterday, at 4:37 pm the time came for Jared's grandmother, Francis Schauerhamer, to join her beloved husband in the afterlife. We will miss her.

She and Grampa have been a huge example of selfless acts and Christlike love. They have done everything they can to help anyone they knew. The cabin that our family enjoyed often was a great source of joy for them to share with others. I remember the first time I met them, when Jared had invited a group of friends from college up to the cabin (we were barely starting to date). I saw Grandma and Grampa sitting contently on the porch swing, holding hands. I hoped that when I met my husband, we would be like that when we're old and gray.

Grampa passed away last May. Since they lived in Sugarhouse, we were able to visit them often. I am so grateful that Jared and I got to visit her just hours before she left.

On Monday, the 28th, Jared and I got to visit with her while the kids played downstairs. Her room felt so peaceful. She told me I looked so pretty. She always says that! I told her she's been such an example to me. I thanked her for the many things she has done for us, and she said, with her hand thrown up in frustration, "I wish I could do more". That is so like Grandma to say. I will always remember that as one of the last things that she said. Even in her last days here, she was frustrated that she couldn't do more for us. We talked about the weather and the cabin. She told us, again, that it makes her so sad when no one is at the cabin. I assured her that we have a trip planned to go in a few weeks. That was the last conversation we had with Grandma.

When we went to visit her yesterday, she was sleeping peacefully. We shared stories that we remembered of her. Jared spoke to her of her husband, sisters, and parents that she will soon be reunited with, and he asked her to give Evan a hug for us.

I am so grateful for the knowledge that we can all be together again with our families someday. We will miss you both so much, Grandma and Grampa!

Remembering President Gordon B. Hinckley

I love this photo of President Hinckley. He was so patient with all the photographers who were constantly taking his picture. He did say one time, in a quiet tone, that "if all the cameras in the world were thrown into the ocean, there would be a great flood." I will miss President Hinckley's wonderful sense of humor.

Here is a poem that a friend of a friend of mine wrote:

President Hinckley would want it that way.

I imagine he's running to Marjorie now. Yes, running, not waving his cane.
I see him embracing his father and mother while they keep repeating his name.
I see him now meeting his forebears, Brother Brigham and Joseph are there.
Sweet reunion of Prophets, united by service that only such noble men share.
I see Him embraced by the Savior while Father says, "Good and well done.
So faithful in stalwart endurance, I welcome my noble, most Excellent Son."
I then hear the ripples of laughter as he says, "the reception's just fine,"
But he hopes that He'll get an assignment or two since there's no need to waste time.
I can hear His clear voice in the stillness at the close of this sweet Sabbath day
"Have faith and move foreward-there's work to be done."
President Hinckley would want it that way.

I am so grateful to live in the time that President Hinkley served as our prophet. He will be missed!

Meet Matt Harpring!

Tonight, while Jared stayed home with Lance and Kyle AND built shelves in our laundry room (the two without junk on them are the new ones)...

...Jace and I got to meet Matt Harpring at the Energy Solutions Arena! Once a year, the Junior Jazz basketball program has a "Meet the Player" night. Jace listened intently as Harpring spoke about the importance of a good attitude and working hard. Do your homework and get good grades so that you can do other fun stuff like sports. "Attitude is Altitude" he said.
He also answered questions from the crowd. One that impressed me the most was, "Who was your best coach?" Matt thought for a minute and said that it was his Dad who took the time to teach him important things and helped him progress and succeed.

Jace's group, on the left - third ( I don't even know if that describes it, but it's the best I can do) of the crowd, got to join Harpring on the floor after winning a "Who can cheer the loudest?" contest. Harpring led them in jumping jacks and had them count to ten and stop. He said, "There's going to be someone that says, 'Eleven!'", and sure enough the kids in the back were embarrassed after saying it. Then he let them count to 5, and sure enough there were some boys that yelled, "Six!" and Jace was laughing with the rest. He gave them 3, then 2, then only 1, and the boys continued to say the next number when everyone else stopped. Many laughs... (Jace did it right, though :)He's on the top - third from the right - can you see him?
