A THOUSAND
La Roca A team girls 09 after last game in Vegas March 24, 2019 |
Cami just competed in her first out of state tournament last weekend in Las Vegas. The girls were so excited for this and had such a blast together, since we were in the same hotel as most of the team, so it was nice for the girls to just chill together and play outside of soccer. They got some good bonding time in that was much needed. The soccer part of the trip was rough though. They played against tough teams like one from Southern California that have soccer outdoors year round. We play indoors in the winter on a field about half the size of the outdoor fields. Cami's team didn't win any of the 3 games they played, and it was very discouraging as well as educating for the girls. I think it was good preparation for this Spring season.
Cami is super into sports. She also enjoys going to tumbling, and hopes to begin taking dance again if she can fit it in.
So I was curious how she would feel about soccer after this trip in Vegas. About 2 years ago, she was asked by the owner of the dance studio to compete in dance. So she was trying to decide if she wanted to do comp dance or soccer. I asked her to rate her sports from 1-10 by how much she loves them. She rated dance at 8, tumbling at a 10, and soccer at 100 haha! This girl likes her some soccer. So she began the road to competition soccer. She made the B team in her first year in La Roca Soccer, and last year tried out again for Wasatch Soccer Club as well as La Roca. It was fun making the Wasatch team (because she didn't make it the previous year) but she made the A team for La Roca, which is more competitive, so she definitely wanted La Roca. Plus the cute red head, Marley, is one of her best friends and neighbors here, and of course they wanted to be on the same team again. They've done dance and tumbling together as well, before they began this soccer ride.
So yesterday, I curiously asked Cami where everything rates now. Tumbling is now down to 8 (she's switching gyms back to where she took dance and tumbling before trying out a new gym this year, and will probably enjoy it more there, she says). Dance is back up to 10. And soccer? "A thousand", she says. All these rough losses didn't get this girl down! She's heading into spring season of soccer in full swing, or kick, I should say :) Vamos, La Roca!
Better luck next post
Just wanted to write a quick update. Kids first day of school was yesterday. Crazy! 2nd, 4th, 6th (and last year in elementary school)
Anyway now it's already spring break, and I'm laughing at this post that I began in the beginning of this school year. Must have been a very busy and eventful year! Hopefully I'll finish my post the same day I begin it next time!

Salt Lake City Temple: Lance and Kyle's First Time!
Lance, Carter, (Lance's friend) and Kyle have been going to the temple when they can. We aim for once a month, but it doesn't always work out that frequently. This month was my month to drive, and I asked Lance which temple he'd like to go to. He's been really wanting to go to the SLC temple. I love that they go together and can share this experience together.
And I love these photos!

2015 Christmas Sacrament Meeting Program
So for months, or basically since I got my calling as choir director, I have been very anxious about the Christmas Program for this year. Somehow, it all came together today in Sacrament meeting, and, wow, just feeling gratitude and joy with how it turned out! We have many talented musicians in our ward. Such a wonderful experience listening to it all wrapped up in 45 minutes. And the timing was perfect. Finished right on time. Phew!
The perks to being in charge of the program is that you get to pick your favorite songs for the choir to sing. Another fun thing about it is that you get to ask people to sing that you love listening to, very talented singers ;). When I asked one of the soloists to sing, I asked her to think of a song that she absolutely loves to sing and get back to me. She did, and it happened to have Silent Night in it, which we were already singing for our closing song. I listened to the recording anyway, thought it sounded great, but didn't want to be repetitive with the same song. So she was very understanding when I told her, but when she said that she just super loves the spirit of that song, I felt a pang that maybe I wasn't making a good choice not having her sing it. So I thought about it and decided that we CAN have 2 Silent Nights in one program! One at the beginning and one at the end. I got this particular song (Silent Night is only the last half of the song) ok'd by the Bishop, and went to listen to her practice with the primary, who sings the "Silent Night" part, while she sings her solo. When I sat there and heard it for the first time, I was in tears. Her voice was amazing, and the Spirit that she and the primary children's voices brought was incredible. It was so much better than the recording that she'd sent me sung by a professional singer. I'm so glad I didn't go by that recording, and followed my feelings and her feelings instead. Anyways, I was in tears again today and was wiping my face right before we, the choir, were supposed stand and sing. Ah! Love those tears and truly beautiful music!
There's more I could say about this program, but I've got to close for today, just want to say that it was such a privilege to be a part of this beautiful praise to our Heavenly Father in this way. This is the best part of my Christmas this year. Anyways, here's how it went:

Emily Eby…….The Most Beautiful Story That’s
Ever Been Told
Narrator Brother Pead:
Today,
we remember one of the most miraculous stories in history, a true story about a
little babe who lived a long time ago.
Will the primary children please come forward?
Primary…...Stars are Gleaming,
Primary with solo by Amanda Tullis…….Silent Night
Narrator Brother Pead:
And it came to pass in those days, that there went
out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And Joseph also went up from Galilee,
out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is
called Bethlehem to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with
child.
Choir……..Nativity Medley
Narrator Brother
Waddoups reads while YW come up
Luke 2:6 And so it was, that, while they were there,
the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped
him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room
for them in the inn.
Young

Narrator Brother
Waddoups:
Matthew 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in
Bethlehem, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in
the east, and are come to worship
him.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said,
Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come
and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king, they
departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till
it came and stood over where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced
with exceeding great joy.

Narrator
Brother Waddoups:
And the angel of the Lord came and said unto the shepherds
abiding in the field, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great
joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the
city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And
this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host
praising God, and
saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Brianna Ingles……
Oh Holy Night
Narrator Brother Pead:
And
it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the
shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this
thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they
came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this
child.
Choir…….. Gesu Bambino
Narrator Brother Pead
During this season and
always, may we see the purity of the story of the Savior’s birth and feel
sincere gratitude for the matchless gift that was given, even His life, teachings, and saving
sacrifice for us. May this gratitude cause us to renew our determination to
follow Him. May it also lead us to draw closer to our family, our church, and
our fellowmen, and may we look steadfastly forward to that blessed day when the
resurrected Christ will walk the earth again as our Lord, our King, and our
blessed Savior.

This Mom is Just a Little Proud
Cami loves dancing. However, she didn't want to do it on stage. I wanted so much for her to be in a dance class, but I wasn't sure how it would go because of this stage thing. So we went in to register her for dance last summer to find out if she has to dance on stage to be in a class. They said that she didn't. However, I told Cami that I wouldn't be buying the beautiful costume that the dancers get that perform on stage. It would be her choice (Inside I was dying because I selfishly want SO MUCH to watch my princess dance on stage!)
About 2 months ago, Cami was put in the front row of her dance group because, she said, her teacher told her she was doing a very good job. Although pleased, I was concerned because I knew that she wasn't planning to go on stage and I didn't want to mess anything up for them. I talked to her teacher about it, and somewhere between the teacher and Cami, they had decided that Cami was good with going on stage now. Yipee!!
So tonight, about 3 months after she began dance in September, I went to pick up Cami from dance. I brought our new tiny camcorder, just for fun, in case I got there early enough to record the last part of their dance. I got there just in time, and began recording through the window. At the end of the dance, Cami got in front of all the dancers and stood, holding her right leg high in the air. After the dance I thanked her teacher and asked her what that was about. She told me that they had tryouts 2 weeks ago, and they picked Cami to do the last solo part. Oh can I tell you that I'm so excited!? This is Cami's first year of taking dance and she's a star! So proud! We went out for ice cream to celebrate. I think we'll have ice cream again after her performance in the Spring YIPEEE!!!

I may be quite biased, and I think Cami will be an incredible teacher and/or author someday. Actually, she already is. She has a classroom in her bedroom, including a chalkboard and a pointer. She loves writing. She writes notes, to do lists, letters, and stories. I found this book she made with notebook paper and staples the other day, and thought it was so adorable and I was amazed at her talent and plot. So I had her type it. She began, and then asked if she could read it to me while I type. So here it is:
Sam and Pam
By Camille Jane Martin
Once upon a time Sam was Looking out The window and he decided to go to Pam’s house so he went to Pam’s house and knocked on the Door. The door opened. Pam let Sam in. They sat down and Pam told Sam a story. Then Sam had to leave, so he said, “goodbye Pam, thank you, oh wait!” said Sam. But it was too late. The door was shut.
“I’ll get it tomorrow.”
The next day he went to Pam’s house. On the way, he saw Pam. He was going to Sam’s house. And they decided to go to Sam’s house and drink some chocolate milk. And then they played a little. Then Pam had to leave. So he said, “Goodbye” and went to his house. The next day, Pam went to Sam’s house and so he did. When he got inside he and Sam made chocolate chip cookies and ate them.
And then Sam led Pam to his living room to watch a movie called, “Too Much Apple Pie.” And so they did. And then it was over and Pam had to leave. So he did.
Now boys and girls, do you think that Sam and Pam play every day? I want you to think about that for a minute. The End.

Here's the roll recipe for those of you that requested it. Just made some again today. I think we're trying to make up for time lost cuz these are going fast!
Jenny's rolls
(Although I got this recipe from a bread machine book many years ago when we were first married, sure I'll take the credit now since I don't have that recipe anymore!)
2 Tablespoons yeast
scant 1/4 cup sugar (or not scant, if you like sugar ;)
2 cups warm water
Let sit til bubbly or foamy, about 15 min or so. Then turn on your mixer to LOW and add:
2 teaspoons salt
4 -6 Tablespoons butter (if your hubbie comes up behind you and adds yet even more butter it's okay, it makes it even more tasty!)
1/4 cup powdered milk (optional if you have a milk allergy, which we don't but I've seen french bread recipes that are pretty much the same as mine except no milk and less butter)
2 cups bread flour plus some more for later
Mix these a couple minutes 'til combined, then gradually add more bread flour while mixing until it pulls from sides of bowl, about 2-3 cups. Try not to add too much flour, it can make the bread tough. Slightly sticky dough is good. You can add a tiny bit more flour when forming the rolls.
That's pretty much it I guess. Just let the dough rise about an hour or so, til it's about double, then shape rolls, let them rise about 20-30 min. Bake at 350 for about 12-15 min. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas!
Cami (5 in January) – Does cartwheels,
handstands, and pullovers in an advanced gymnastics class now; Rides her bike without
training wheels 3.7 miles around a lake!
Began soccer and basketball.
Kyle (7) – 1st Grade; Loves to build and fix things like his
Dad. Even rescued a very sad child in
school with a broken lunchbox; Plays
soccer, basketball, baseball, Legos, Geotrax, and loves gardening. He watched the garden grow all summer, and
continues his dream to be a farmer someday.
(Cami has to be with him, too, she says, so she’s going to have a house
by him and farm as well.)
Lance (9) - Fastest runner in 3rd
grade! Plays soccer, baseball, basketball,
and kickball. Loves animals, especially dogs and cats, and wants to either be a
vet, or work at a pet store someday.
Sets the standard by racing to get his chores done so they can just be
done and he can play! Plays with the
leopard gecko that he and Kyle bought together for their birthdays.
Evan (would be 12!) – we believe that he
continues to watch over us, and as his birthdays and angel days come and go, we
enjoy sharing the sweetness of his memories and continue to long for that day
that we will be reunited. We are so
grateful for our Heavenly Father’s plan for us – that we can all be together
again someday!
Jace (13) – 8th Grade; Ran first 5K, sings bass in choir at school,
and also made it for show choir (yay!) Began
his own business with yard care and enjoys spending his money on hobbies, like
his lizards, and sports like basketball.
Favorite hobby: Eating. Is now
taller than his mom! Loves PE but not
other classes in school like English and French.
Jenny – Coached her first soccer team this year
(Lance’s). COULD NOT have done it
without Assistant Coach Jace (since she’s never played before in her life-
first practice he had to correct her that it was going to be a scrimmage not a
skirmish), still co-coaching Cami’s
gymnastics class; Plans to do some serious crazy dancing with Jared at that
graduation party in June.
Jared -- in 4th and last year of
residency, graduating in June! Enjoyed a
hunting trip to Utah in September; Is
interviewing (with Jenny! much to her delight!). He isn’t so sure about this serious crazy
dancing.
Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! With Love, The Martins

Lance's Birthday
Laughing at the singing card. It sings Happy Birthday to you and after you "blow" the candles out, you hear a crowd cheering. It was a hit today and every night for Lance's bedtime lullaby. |
The bullfrog Kyle caught for Lance on his birthday at Castlewood |
- His smile. It is just CHARMING!!! And handsome, of course ;) Watch out in a few years, young ladies!
- His energy. I want it. He is my get-it-doner. If I want something done, rather than doing it myself, I know I can just ask him to do it. Ha ha! I'm trying not to abuse this fact ;)
- His curiousity. He loves catching frogs, crawfish, and other creepy-crawlies of the swamp, or at Castlewood ;)
- His dedication to his work. He works hard in school and does a good job getting the grades he wants.
- He LOVES reading!!! I just love this.
- Jace loves playing catch with him with the football.
- Cami loves when he lets him come in his room.
- Kyle loves catching frogs with him. He actually gave him a bullfrog he caught from Castlewood on Lance's birthday. (On his shoulder in photo)
- Jared loves his energy and smile too. Actually I think he said it first and I just copied him. AND those are my favorite things about him too! ;)
- Ramen Noodles
- Pizza
- Orange
- Capture the Flag
- Kickball
- Kicking the Football
- Legos
- Pumpkin icecream in the cone
- Fast music
- Tom and Jerry movies
- Watching movies
- Jumping on the trampoline
- Pool time in the summer

Happy Birthday Dad!!!
3 Flips for you with all my love~! (I just found out today that I could do that still!) Thank you for putting me through all those years of gymnastics!
Also, here are a few more notes from all of us.
What I love about Grampa Gilland:
Kyle: I like that we
got to go to his house. I played the with
marble track.
Cami: He's been nice to me.
I liked playing with the marble track, too.
Lance: Grampa Gilland
has been a good Grampa. He's been nice
to me. He's been a good example to me
and my family. I liked playing with
Zoe. I liked playing with the marble
track, too. I remember going to the
hotel with them and I got SOOOOOO stuffed.
And I ate a whole bunch of food!
It was fun going to the hotel with them.
Jace: What I love
most about Grampa Gilland is eating his food and cooking with him. It tastes
really good.
Jenny: What I love
most about Dad is the amount of love that he has for me. What a great feeling! I'm so grateful to have a father that cares
so much for me.
Jared: What I love
most about Jim is the love he shows for my family, and the efforts he puts
forth to help us be healthy.

April Fool's!
OOOOOH Yum! Cupcakes for Dinner! Anyone that comes into my kitchen on April Fool's is one brave cookie... or cupcake! Hehe. I found this great recipe here and it was actually pretty yummy! I thought. The kids (except Jace) ended up really disappointed. Ha! I think I had the most fun with this than anyone ;) |
It was hard not to smile really big when unsuspecting Jace came to me about something he was excited about as I walked with him a little more away from the kitchen.
I had told them all what day it was this morning before they left for school (fair, right?), but I guess they completely forgot. The photos are pretty much before they tasted it. I couldn't get the video to upload their reaction. Oh well, it's kinda sad anyway. They got the real thing for dessert though, so I'm not all mean! I think they'll appreciate it more when they look back on it as a pleasant memory.
